Magic Cristal Park Hotel Becomes Spain’s First to Achieve The PLEDGE on Food Waste Gold Certification with FIT

The hospitality sector in Spain has taken a major step forward in sustainability. Magic Cristal Park Hotel in Benidorm has become the first hotel in the country to achieve the Gold Certification from The PLEDGE on Food Waste, a recognition of excellence in reducing and managing food waste. 🌍✨

This achievement was unveiled at the Annual Meeting of Hotel Directors (AEDH), held in Madrid on November 8th, where Rodrigo Arribas, Director of Magic Cristal Park Hotel, and Cristina Blaj, CEO of Open Revenue Consulting and Accredited Consultant for The PLEDGE on Food Waste, shared the results of this pioneering project.

Collaboration and Technology Driving Change

The certification process was led by Cristina Blaj, whose expertise combined with the Lightblue FIT app empowered Magic Cristal Park to transform its approach to food waste management. Together, they built a strategy around three key pillars:

  • Staff training and awareness: engaging every team member, from kitchen staff to management, to understand the scale of the issue and their role in solving it.
  • Technology adoption: implementing FIT to track and analyze waste across every stage, from procurement to service.
  • Collaboration with suppliers and guests: creating a culture of shared responsibility for sustainability.

Tangible Results, Measurable Impact

By embedding FIT into daily operations, the hotel achieved outstanding results:

  • Food waste reduced from 140g per cover to 76g, representing 45% food waste reduction
  • Annual savings exceeding €200,000
  • Significant reduction in CO₂ emissions and environmental footprint

To maintain momentum, the hotel also created a “Food Lovers Committee”, meeting weekly to review data, make decisions, and share progress with suppliers, staff, and guests. Guest engagement was further boosted through surveys, signage, and gamification initiatives, while supplier partnerships focused on seasonal, local sourcing to reduce carbon impact at the source.

A Benchmark for Spain’s Hospitality Industry

With Spain’s Law 1/2025 on Food Waste Prevention coming into force, Magic Cristal Park Hotel has proven that compliance can be turned into a competitive advantage. Their success demonstrates that sustainability is not a cost, but an opportunity to improve profitability while protecting the planet.
